Maria G. Ibarra-Frayre, Homilist

Maria Ibarra-Frayre, LLMSW is an immigrant rights activist in the Metro Detroit region. She immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico when she was nine years old and grew up in Southwest Detroit and Dearborn. A “dreamer,” her place in this country was protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA)—a program currently under threat by the Trump administration. Maria graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy with a major in English, and then went on to get a Masters of Social Work at the University of Michigan. She served for two years in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.

Maria has been fighting for immigrant justice for almost a decade, including grassroots organizing and political advocacy. She works closely with grassroots organizations to create alternative systems of immigrant-centered support and works to put people of color and women in positions of leadership. She currently works as the Southeast Michigan regional organizer for We the People Michigan.

She is a poet, a writer, a speaker, and Call To Action is excited to bring her voice to the convention as the homilist for our closing liturgy.
