Parents of LGBT children host retreat
Local members of CTA, Dignity and Fortunate Families teamed up in the Twin Cities last week to host a retreat for parents of LGBT children. The day-long retreat, titled "Our Families: Rooted in Love, Enriched by Diversity" was organized by local members of three Equally Blessed partners, including Call To Action.
Organizer and CTA-MN member Myrna described the day this way: "We started with prayer, of course, and then we simply asked people to tell their stories. After each person or couple finished, we held them in silent prayer for a few minutes. Jim spoke last and told a little of his story and then gave a reflection on the development of doctrine and general Catholic perspectives on healthy sexuality and ethics. I wrapped up the afternoon with a short "What do we do now?" kind of thing and then we joined the Dignity Twin Cities community for Mass at 5:00 followed by a potluck."
The group of 22 was small enough that the group could sit in a circle and reflect together and included people with many different stories and in different places in their journey of acceptance and celebration of the children they love. Many people asked how they can make such an event a recurring event. To learn more about Equally Blessed and our work with LGBT families, check out www.equally-blessed.org
