Nuns stand up for birth control, CTA signs on in support

The National Coalition of American Nuns is standing up and has asked Catholics to join them. Next week, the Supreme Court will hear arguments from plaintiffs who think a boss's "religious freedom" should trump a woman's control of her own medical decisions.  These brave nuns and the individuals and groups who've followed their leadership, know that true religious freedom doesn't mean controlling others.

“This has gotten out of hand,” Sister Donna Quinn, head of NCAN, told Religion Dispatches. “It isn’t ‘faith and freedom’ when reproductive autonomy isn’t extended by the Catholic Church to women. Now we have other Christian religions seeing what the bishops are doing and saying we will do likewise. It isn’t freedom when a woman can be held hostage by the owner of a business.”

The petition they've put forth has nearly 4000 signatures, add your own name and spread the word now! The petition will be delivered to the Supreme Court by the Religious Institute, along with a letter from faith leaders.Call To Action is one of the 46 faith groups who have signed an open letter about the same issue. "We support religious freedom. Religious freedom means that each individual has the right to exercise their own beliefs and the right not to have others’ beliefs forced upon them," reads part of the letter. "We believe no employer has the right to deny the women who work for them basic health care. Individuals must have the right to accept or reject the principles of their own faith without legal restrictions."
