Where Do We Go From Here?
The West Suburban chapter of Call To Action met Sunday, June 7, to talk about the next steps they want to take as a group. Only in existence for two years, the chapter has been very active. They have already offered a talk by Father Roy Bourgeois, listened to a panel of married priests, invited Barbara Zeman, a female priest, to share her experiences, and hosted a LBGTQ panel to talk about issues of physical and spiritual homelessness.
Father Bob Colaresi, O. Carm, led the discussion by encouraging the 40 plus people in attendance to stop waiting for those in authority but to “trust the Spirit speaking in your heart.” He acknowledged the restlessness some feel about the hierarchy of the Church and reminded the participants of the Catholic Church’s teaching on the ‘primacy of conscience.’ By continuing to read scripture and pay attention to Jesus’ teaching, Father Bob invited the group to stay in the Church, even though it is frustrating at times, and to speak the truth as best as they are able. “You need to be in touch with what you know is true.”
The group then responded to the question, ”Where do we go from here?” with a sincere desire for Christian communities where all are welcome. A need for ritual was voiced, and supporting priests who are inclusive in the face of potential disciplinary action by writing letters of affirmation was suggested. While the specifics of the next steps of the West Suburban Call To Action are being finalized by the core team, questions linger for all gathered and every one of us: How am I inclusive? How do I let others know all are welcome with me? How do I live my truth?
