INCITE Conference builds energy for justice
As activists for a more just Church and world, we are inspired by so many movements for social change. Last weekend, Rosa, a CTA board member, met some of those working for change at the INCITE conference in Chicago. "These are people who've seen injustice and said 'I'm not putting up with this anymore'" says Rosa, who shared with workshop attendees her story as a woman of color called to priesthood in the Catholic church.
INCITE! is a nation-wide network of radical feminists of color working to end violence against women, gender non-conforming, and trans people of color, and our communities. We support each other through direct action, critical dialogue, and grassroots organizing." say organizers of the Conference on their website.
"Amazing" is how Rosa describes the energy in the room. After her session she talked with some of the attendees about how they've wrestled with their own relationship to the Church and the struggles of working in justice movements where religion is not always respected. "For CTA folks who still have a fire in their belly for justice in the world," she says, "[meeting these activists] could be a real catalyst." Many of the attendees were young and there was a large representation from the trans* community. These amazing activists for justice say, "by supporting grassroots organizing, we nurture the health and well-being of communities of color. Through our efforts, we move closer toward global justice, liberation, and peace." As we work to dismantle structures of oppression in our Church, Call To Action hopes to support and follow amazing leaders like those of INCITE!
