Community continues to #TeachAcceptance
Tonight, San Francisco parents, students and alumni will gather again for a vigil in support of open, accepting communities. Community members have come together after Archbishop Cordileone proposed strict morality clauses for teachers at some Catholic High Schools. A petition launched by local community members (and supported by CTA staff) has gathered over 6000 signatures and calls on the Archbishop to remove the clauses. "When I was a student at Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep, I was taught to be open minded; I was taught that everyone is deserving of compassion. This language undermines a lot of the teachings from my time at Sacred Heart - teachings from competent, intelligent, and overall outstanding faculty. Thankfully their words will have a longer lasting affect on me than this 'doctrine' ever will,” said one alumni on Facebook. Vigils, letters to the editor and testimony from local politicians, leaders and parents are putting pressure on the Archbishop to let teachers do their job. Beginning with students on Twitter, the campaign is calling for schools to #trustSFteachers and #teachacceptance.
This vigil will be held in the same spirit as the one students led earlier this month while the teachers were meeting with the Archbishop. Many parents, students, and friends from parishes were not able to join us then, so this is an opportunity to come together as a larger community to lend support to our teachers, and to respectfully and prayerfully call upon the Archbishop to stop his initiatives to change the teachers' contracts and school handbook, say organizers of tonight's event. If you're in the area, be sure to show your support for welcoming community and workers rights!
