Church Workers To Stand Together in Solidarity at Call To Action Conference
Catholic Church Workers To Stand Together in Solidarity in Milwaukee at Largest U.S. Progressive Catholic Conference
Call To Action, the country’s largest organization working for equality and justice in the Catholic Church today, will gather for its 39th annual conference November 6-8, 2015 in Milwaukee, WI.
As part of the 3-day conference program, approximately 1,200 Catholics will gather to endorse a Church Worker Declaration that calls on the institutional Church to treat workers justly. Catholic orders and institutions will also be asked to support the declaration and the Church Workers whose service to the Church must be respected. A portion of the declaration reads:
The Church is indebted to workers who have dedicated their lives to service in Catholic schools, dioceses, parishes, hospitals, and other Catholic organizations. Unfortunately, in recent years many Catholic workers have been unjustly terminated or deprived of fair contract renewals. These firings have typically targeted those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) along with women. These unjust terminations are not only spiritually, emotionally, and financially devastating for the individual, but they also impact students, parishioners, family members, colleagues, and others, often diminishing their level of trust and respect for the Church.
The conference theme – Love Radically. Live Faithfully. – will focus on the diverse ways Catholics are living out their faith. The conference will explore ways we stand together in solidarity as sisters and brothers committed to our faith and transformation in the Church and world.
The Catholic Church is in a significant period of change. With important topics swirling throughout the news and in the pews with the conclusion of last week’s Fourteenth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, and as Pope Francis continues to seek reform, Call To Action’s conference will provide a much needed forum for Catholics to dialogue about issues plaguing the Church today (e.g., divorced and remarried Catholics, same-sex relationships, women’s ordination and equality, etc.).
