Call To Action is further encouraged by Pope Francis’s remarks in his interview with Rev. Antonio Sporado, S. J. As the largest Catholic organization working for equality and justice in the Church today, we are heartened by Francis’s openness and candor, willingness to dialogue with all, and his attempts at transparency and consultation. We’ve long held more inclusive, open conversations to be healthy for our Church.
Important in Pope Francis’s remarks is his emphasis on the Church being the people of God. Jim FitzGerald, Executive Director of Call to Action, agrees: “It is refreshing and quite positive to us that the Pope acknowledges and reinforces this central tenet of our faith. The stories, experiences, and voices of all God’s people should be celebrated.” CTA joins with Francis in focusing on God’s people – not authoritarian structures, divisive politics, or moral dictates – in building up the reign of God.
Catholics around the world have been living a gospel of love and justice for years. As an organization, in in concert with our collaborators, CTA has been laying a foundation for change in the Church. We were encouraged to hear Pope Francis speak of continued discernment and reform. As this spirit of change begins to reach into all levels of our Church, we look forward to working with all those who seek to embody a more accountable, inclusive, and just Church. While there is more work to do, we remain hopeful transformational change is afoot.
