Call To Action National Assembly’s Statement in Support of Standing Rock
We acknowledge that the history of our country incudes genocide, colonization and oppression of indigenous communities – including land seizures and broken treaties.
We acknowledge that today the people of Standing Rock Reservation are facing the intrusion of the Dakota Access Pipeline to carry dirty fossil fuels through their sacred lands and source of water, and, in standing firm against it, have been met with violence.
We acknowledge that the Native American communities, and especially Standing Rock, are frontline communities in the battle against climate change, which, in the end, will affect all of us.
We are inspired by the recent encyclical, Laudato Si, Care of Our Common Home, which calls us to protect the earth, and very specifically calls for care of sacred lands of indigenous communities.
We therefore commit to stand in solidarity with Standing Rock.
We call upon President Obama to use his power to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline and to stop the violence against the water and land protectors.
We commit to support the Standing Rock water and land protectors by following this issue at www.standingrock.com, and by donating to the DAPL fund to help with supplies for the courageous protectors.
We affirm this by standing up for a moment of silence during which we think about this commitment.
