In partnership with Baltimore’s Racial Justice Circle, CTA Maryland is proud to present a virtual Black History Month presentation featuring Dr. Shannen Dee Williams. Dr. Williams’s two-part presentation (morning and afternoon) will address the untold stories of Black Catholic nuns in the long struggle for freedom and the history behind the Catholic Church’s role in slavery in this country. All are welcome to attend. Contact Joan Sattler at joanx@comcast.net with any questions.

  • The morning session will focus on Dr. William’s research on the often forgotten history of the Black Sister-hood and her forthcoming book: Subversive Habits: Black Catholic Nuns in the Long African American Freedom Struggle.

  • The afternoon session will open up a conversation on the historical role of the Catholic Church in slavery and the need for restorative justice.

Dr. Shannen Dee Williams is Associate Professor of History at the University of Dayton. A renowned author-historian of the African American experience with research and teaching specializations in women’s, religious, and Black freedom movement history, she has been featured in the FutureChurch series “Women Witnesses for Racial Justice."
