The position of asylum seekers at the US/Mexico border remains dire as our nation's policies seem unable to create a humane and just solution. Title 42, the public health policy that was inappropriately used by the previous administration to effectively suspend the application of our laws governing asylum, remains in force and every day casts a shadow over the lives of thousands waiting in dangerous conditions on the border.

In this gathering of the Immigration Working Group, we will present two different looks at the current situation:

  1. Jim McKeever, a retired journalist from upstate New York, will be interviewed about his many experiences volunteering at the border — from San Diego to Brownsville. His on-the-ground experiences give him particular insight into what is happening to real people every day.

  2. A lawyer from the Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) will present us with an up-to-date and in-depth look at the Title 42 issue in all its aspects. What is it? How is it really being enforced?  What are the legal paths to asylum right now?  What are the prospects for change?  These and other questions will be dealt with. TCRP has a website that provides more information about their work.

A Q&A will follow each part of the program. We hope that you will be able to spend part of a summer Saturday morning with us as we gather (again) around this important issue.
