Fair Foods for Thanksgiving

I am not sure about all of you but I have already made my grocery list for the foods I will need for Thanksgiving. I think of which grocery store I am going to go to, but thinking about the people who grew and harvested the food I will purchase stretches my imagination. Ellen McNally from Florida sent me an email from the Coalition of Immolate Workers. They are "calling on consumer allies across the country to join them in demanding justice — not charity — from the major food retailers who purchase the food farmworkers harvest." They are calling on Wendy's and Publix grocery chain to move beyond the "family friendly" image they have created to real, sustainable change, to take a stance of justice that is "a commitment to the human rights and farmworkers and their families."

If you remember, the Coalition of Immolate Workers has been working for many years to get farm workers fair wages for their hard work. They work with large corporations to have fair food agreements, "establishing more humane farm labor standards and fairer wages for farmworkers." While I am not a seller of produce, I can ask my grocery store if they have considered have a fair food agreement. And I can be mindful that I am buying my food from local growers as much as possible and pay attention to the labels indicating whether it was grown with sustainable and organic practices. This Thanksgiving, I will be grateful for the blessings on and around my table. I will also be thankful for the many hands for grew and harvested the bounty.
