November 2009
Roy Bourgeois, Maryknoll priest and SOA Watch Founder, is one of the few priests willing to speak publicly about women's ordination. The Vatican has threatened him with excommunication for doing so.

Now, Roy and women's ordination advocates are hitting the road on a national tour, lifting up their voices for equality in cities across the country and building the movement for an inclusive church.

Add your voice by attending one of the events in your area or consider hosting Roy in your city. For more information about hosting, contact Nicole at justchurch@cta-usa.org.

You may also join Roy at Call To Action's Conference this year where he will be a keynote speaker on the topic of "A New Model of Being Church."

Our tour leaders look forward to welcoming you to the following events. Don't miss being a part of this historic time in our church's history as we break the silence on women's ordination and shatter the stained glass ceiling.

For justice,

Call To Action and Women's Ordination Conference Staff,
coordinators of the Shatter the Stained Glass Ceiling Tour

November 2008:
A Roman Catholic priest faces excommunication for his public support of women's ordination through the Roman Catholic Womenpriests movement. The priest is Fr. Roy Bourgeois, founder of the School of the Americas (SOA) Watch who is known internationally for his work to end U.S. government-funded combat training of Latin American militaries. This November, he has decided to risk his 36 years of priesthood to end sexism in the Church.

The Vatican issued its threat of excommunication due to Fr. Bourgeois' participation in the ordination of Janice Sevre-Duszynska in Lexington, KY on August 9, 2008. Fr. Bourgeois gave the homily during which he said. "Sexism is a sin" and went on to say, "The hierarchy will say, 'It is the tradition of the church not to ordain women.' I grew up in a small town in Louisiana and often heard, 'It is the tradition of the South to have segregated schools.' It was also 'the tradition' in our Catholic church to have the Black members seated in the last five pews of the church. No matter how hard we may try to justify discrimination, in the end, it is always wrong and immoral."

In late October, the Vatican sent a letter to Fr. Roy Bourgeois' superiors, saying he had 30 days to recant his position on women's ordination or be excommunicated. Fr. Roy has decided to stand by his public support for women's ordination.

Fr. Roy has written a letter to the Vatican in response to their directive. He says "Conscience is very sacred... it is my conscience that compels me to do the right thing. I cannot recant my belief and public statements that support the ordination of women in our Church." The 30 days have now ended and Fr. Roy is awaiting word from the Vatican.

An online petition, initiated by the Women's Ordination Conference, and supported by Fr. Bourgeois and coalition partners Call To Action/USA and Roman Catholic Womenpriests is gathering the signatures and support of thousands of Catholics across the country. Click here to sign the petition, "Break the Silence on Women's Ordination. Shatter the Stained Glass Ceiling." To read Fr. Bourgeois' response to the Vatican, click here.

In the modern world the best way to get people to discuss something is to refuse to let them discuss it. The Vatican will attempt to silence Father Roy. The Curia will ridicule him and attempt to ignore him. Unfortunately, this will lead to sprouting of independent Catholic communities as individual Catholics learn to say no this kind of unchristian dictatorship.

The Curia will not listen but some Catholics will listen and will walk when they find an alternative and their are alternatives.

How can the Roman Catholic hierarchy feign justification for their actions to cut-off and exclude all of those who disagree with them? For learned and intelligent men to stoop so low is morally wrong. All are equal in the eyes of God, and what makes us equal in spite of difference is that all are vessels which hold the breath of God. That breath, a life-force, does not contradict itself. It was blown into Adam...and it was blown into Eve.

Women should be allowed priestly ordination. It is their baptismal right...and if hierarchy doesn not realize it yet---Baptism is something which cannot be undone. And further, excommunication is unacceptable to Christianity. It is a violation against those living the ancient law (Ten Commandments) and the beatitudes---the hallmark of a Christian life.

Women deserve to serve in the manner of which they are called to serve. Fragmentation of the Mystical Body is nothing new...discrimination is deeply rooted in envy!

To praise God, ignore every unjust label except the one by which you define the self. Only God knows what he has made and why.
